What is oud or agarwood?
Oud also called agarwood is a resin coming from the trees of the Aquilaria species present mainly in India, Laos, Bangladesh and Thailand. In perfumery, its essential oil costs between 30 and 40 thousand euros per kilo due to its rarity which is due to various factors, for example at least 30 to 60 years of life of the tree are necessary to have a quality resin.
One aquilaria tree in 100 produces this resin as a response to infection by external agents and parasites, in fact local populations often make small holes in each tree to speed up this process.
Oud is a highly appreciated raw material in perfumery for its woody, strong, decisive scent, depending on the country of origin it can have animalic, sweet and balsamic facets.
